Our Quarter Challenge experience

Thank you so much for joining in The Quarter Challenge! On Saturday night, my family got together with wonderful friends to participate. It was so much fun! One of the reasons I love this concept so much is that both children and adults can get involved in spreading kindness.

First, we visited our local hospital and went to the ER. We taped quarters and small notes of encouragement on the vending machines. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall after we left! The ER was packed that night, and I’m hoping our quarters were a blessing to those who likely ended up waiting there for several hours.

Then we headed to Walmart. My kids, like most children, LOVE the coin-operated machines in front of the store, and we had fun leaving quarters behind for others to discover.

Now to be totally honest, it was a little bit hard for my kids to watch these quarters get left behind and not get to spend any of them. But as a mother, it gave me an opportunity to teach an important lesson about service. We talked about the kids who would be finding these coins and how excited it would make them. And then afterwards, we celebrated with pizza and soda because there are, in fact, rewards that come from serving.

Have you taken the challenge yet? We’d love to hear from you! Remember, in honor of this first challenge, we will be hosting a small giveaway to those who participate – the winner will get $10 donated to the charity of his or her choice! Details can be found here:

Thank you so much for participating! I hope this challenge is providing you with a simple way to serve, and that it brightens your day the way it brightened mine.

The Quarter Challenge

In my house, quarters are precious.

When my kids do a chore, they earn a quarter. And when they want something at the store, instead of telling them yes or no, I tell them how many quarters it costs.

Quarters are powerful in my home. What about yours?

Have you ever considered that you can change someone’s day with a quarter?

One of my goals is to use this website to challenge all of us (especially myself) to find small ways to get out and serve. I’m going to give you small, simple ideas for things you can do to brighten someone else’s day. So here it is, our first project together as a group: the quarter challenge.

Your first assignment: Gather up some quarters.

Your second assignment: Go spread some sunshine.

Quarter challenge - blog-friendly

My kids and I have done this before. And let me tell you – it is AMAZING how much fun you can have giving quarters away. Do you have an Aldi nearby? Go at a busy time and put a quarter into someone else’s cart for them. You know those little machines in front of stores that are full of useless crap wonderful treats and treasures? Put a quarter in one and walk away – let a little kid discover it! Go somewhere with small coin-operated rides and tape quarters on it. Can you imagine the joy?!

Want to invest a little bit more? Here’s another idea that I’ve done before. Visit a hospital and tape quarters to the vending machines. (I use blue painter’s tape so it doesn’t make a sticky mess.) Then leave behind a note, saying something like … “I’m sorry you’re stuck in the hospital today. Have a snack on me! I hope it makes your day a little better.” Because have you spent time in a hospital waiting room? Yeah, me too. And I hate it. Can you imagine how awesome it would be to find something like that? And it doesn’t have to be a hospital – anywhere there’s a vending machine, there’s an opportunity to provide a little bit of sunshine for a stranger!

(Or if you want to get REALLY creative … Are you a baker? For 25 cents worth of flour, sugar, etc., you can make a few muffins and deliver them to a neighbor. Scrapbooker? Make a card and take it to a friend. I’d love to know what ideas you come up with!)

So if you’re willing to join me and accept the quarter challenge, I’d love it! And since this is my very first challenge and I’d love to celebrate, I’m going to be hosting a giveaway. If you win, I will donate $10 to the charity of your choice! And this is optional, but if you’d like to write a little guest post about the charity you choose to donate your winnings to, I’d love to share it with our community. Here’s how you can enter (each activity is worth one entry):

  • RSVP for the quarter challenge on this post
  • Share the quarter challenge on your Facebook page and/or Instagram account and include #thequarterchallenge in your comment
  • Comment on my Facebook page when you complete the challenge and share what you did with the rest of us
  • Post a picture on my Facebook page and/or Instagram account of you doing the quarter challenge (or just of where you left the quarter if you don’t feel comfortable sharing a picture of yourself)
  • Leave a note on your own Facebook page and/or Instagram account sharing what you did and include #thequarterchallenge
  • When you leave your quarter (or quarters) behind, include a small note telling the recipient about and the quarter challenge

Here’s the important technical part about the raffle – for each entry you earn, please leave a separate comment on this post (not on Facebook) and let me know what you did. For example, you can leave an RSVP right now (just leave a comment saying “I’m in!”). If you share it on Facebook or Instagram, write another comment and let me know you did so. And after you participate, report back.

So that’s it! The challenge will start today and end on Tuesday night. The winner will be randomly selected on Wednesday. So grab some quarters and go do some good today! And then come back and let us know how it went!
